WATER
The conference was held July 15 - 18, and on these days we got answers to alot of our questions, such as: Where does San Antonio drinking water come from? And where does the used water go?To begin to understand this, the conference organizers distributed fliers with information, and they took us on a tour where we could watch, ask questions, and interview the personnel that worked in the water system. We also took pictures and video.I understand that most of San Antonio’s drinking water currently comes from the Edwards Aquifer. The city also draws some water from the Trinity Aquifer, which is an excellent water source. The quality of the local water exceeds all state and federal standards; as a result, the Edwards’ aquifer water needs almost no treatment, which helps keep water rates low. All new water supplies will be treated to ensure high quality drinking water that meets drinking water standards.I was interested to know what SAWS does with waste water. For this part of the conference, we visited an area in the treatment facility where we could see the process of recycling waste water. Apparently the water system in San Antonio treats an average of 125 million gallons of waste water per day at four waste water treatment and recycling centers. The recycled water is used as a supplement flow to the regular source.San Antonio‘s world-famous River Walk has both landscape and industrial uses. The effective treatment and reuse of wastewater through the San Antonio River Walk area protects public health, the natural environment and the wildlife that depends on it, Recycling helps reduce demand on the Edwards Aquifer by the downtown area and other receational areas around town.Making our cultural presentations from each country seemed to make us very interesting to other people in attendance. Teachers and other professionals wanted to know more about our countries. I had the opportunity to answer many of the questions, what helped me a lot was the information that I had read on the Internet, the conversations we had about morals, and so on. But the most important thing is that each one of us (teachers from Nicaragua) comes from different parts of our country.
